Cortez was officially founded as a town in 1886. Ranching and farming were mainstays of the economy at the time. The town was also a major trading center for Native Americans.
Located a short drive from Cortez, Mesa Verde National Park is something that shouldn’t be missed. Home to the Ancestral Pueblo people for 700 years, the park protects more than 4000 archeological sites that includes some 600 cliff dwellings. Mesa Verde is listed by National Geographic Traveler as one of the “50 places of a lifetime, The Worlds Greatest Destinations” as well as being included in the New York Times bestseller “1000 Places To See Before You Die”. Cortez has been called the archaeological center of America with Hovenweep National Monument and Canyons of the Ancients National Monument nearby.
During the summer months, the Cortez Farmers Market features produce strictly from local farmers. The Cortez Farmers Market is also rich in diversity. Not only can you buy local vegetables but everything from woodcrafts to specialty breads and local beef is available.
Some of the most popular mountain bike trails in SouthWest Colorado are near Cortez, Colorado. “Phils World” is a great trail for mountain biking beginners all the way to advanced riders.
